Meet Our Staff
Seeds of Hope Farm has two full time managers, Terry Metcalfe and Sister Rita Wienken.

I am Terry Metcalfe. I grew up on a small farm in southeastern Ohio. That atmosphere gave me the love of being outside and a passion for growing plants. That passion led me to own my own landscaping business for seven years.

At Seeds of Hope Farm I am responsible for the greenhouse and livestock operations as well as our fall crops. We sell bedding plants to the community beginning Mother's Day weekend in May and wrap up our sells of bedding plants in early June so I can work on maintaining our chicken and egg production and our fall crops.

I am Sister Rita Wienken. I grew up on a small family farm in northwest Ohio. From a small child I loved to be outside in the garden working with my mom. I learned early on the importance of where our food came from and what it took to raise a family of eight on a small farm. My love for growing things stayed with me as I pursued my dream to become a Sister of St. Francis. My ministry endeavors included teaching in the elementary classroom and working in our maintenance department at our motherhouse. In 1994 I became Director of the Franciscan Earth Literacy Center, a ministry sponsored by the Sisters of St. Francis located in Tiffin, Ohio. I resigned my position as Director in 2005 so that I could begin Seeds of Hope Farm.

Greenhouse

Seeds of Hope Farm has several greenhouses that grow bedding plants for use on the farm and for selling to the public. Terry has become an expert in greenhouse production without the use of harmful chemicals. His love for plants is evident as you see him tenderly care for each plant he raises. Our greenhouse sales for the public begins Mother's Day weekend and include the following bedding plants: geraniums, petunias, snap dragons, dusty miller, impatiens, peppers, tomatoes, squashes, cucumbers, and a variety of herbs. Come early as our plants sell quickly.

Self Service Farm Stand

Our self-service farm stand opens in early June and closes after our fall harvest, some time mid - October. We provide the general public with, quality, chemical-free produce and free-range eggs. The farm stand is located just north of the Franciscan Earth Literacy Center. Follow the signs from St. Francis Ave. We are open daily from 9:00 a.m. – dusk. Closed Sunday.

  Join Our CSA

What is a CSA? Community Supported Agriculture is a consumer - based movement that allows families to enjoy fresh, chemical free produce all season long. At the beginning of the season a family purchases a share in the farm and then once a week picks up fresh produce from the farm. Purchasing a share is an opportunity to support the on-going work of the farm and at the same time receive quality, fresh produce. Seeds of Hope CSA is in its third season. There will be 40 shares available in 2008.

There are two types of shares available, a working share and a non-working share. Working shares give the shareholder an opportunity to work on the farm for a reduction in the price of a share. Working shares are valuable for the farm and the shareholder. Fresh market production of vegetables, herbs, flowers, and fruits are very labor intensive. Shareholders who decide to take a working share help to off set the work on the farm. A working share provides the shareholder with an opportunity to engage in the farm activities and see first hand how a farm operates and the work it takes to maintain a quality enterprise. The work can also be satisfying for the individual or family because they can realize the benefits of working in a garden for a certain number of hours throughout the season without having the burden of maintaining their own garden which can be very time consuming.
